The LUNYA x LACMA Collab
BRINGING MONDRIAN'S MINIMALISM TO MODERN RESTWEAR
In our second installment of merging art with rest, we partner with the renowned encyclopedic Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to transform Piet Mondrian’s iconic Composition in White, Red, and Yellow into wearable works of art.
Our design team was immensely inspired by Mondrian’s clean lines and geometric elegance. The collection embodies a thoughtful interplay of primary colors and negative space designed to infuse the wearer’s downtime with a mindful sense of balance and repose.
“Mondrian’s art is significant because it exemplifies the De Stijl art movement’s focus on abstraction, simplicity, and purity," says Ashley Merrill, founder of Lunya. "I love simplicity and am always attracted to a minimalistic approach because simple doesn’t need to mean ‘less.’ Instead, it allows me to spend more time and focus on a creation, making every line and every detail that much more important.”
Mondrian’s restrained palette and geometry echoes his pursuit of universal harmony. These wearable masterpieces don’t merely reference Mondrian’s art, but seek to embody his ideals of balance and purity in a way that feels refreshingly contemporary. We imagine the wearer achieving their maximal calm.
To Merrill, blending art and rest speaks to a deeper connection between beauty and well-being. “Art for me is beauty. It’s questioning, it’s feeling,” she reflects. “You can live without those things, but it is a singular, soulless experience. Rest is a pillar of life, a necessity that you cannot live without. Like life, you can rest without art, but art is what makes our experiences enjoyable and deep.”
With the Lunya x LACMA collab, we invite you to experience rest not as an absence of activity but as an intentional engagement with simplicity – where the quiet beauty of Mondrian’s art can merge seamlessly with the practice of better, more mindful rest.
