A closer look at our new palm print.
Whether you have a green thumb or can’t keep a cactus alive, our new palm print is probably for you. Low maintenance, limited edition, feels like you’re outside when you’re inside. It’s basically pure summertime bliss. To celebrate the launch, we’re taking you on a journey of the inspo behind the design with our founder, Ashley, and witness as she takes “plant lady” to entirely new levels.
Can you describe the design process for us a little bit?
A: Our inspiration for summer had an element of escapism combined with feelings of heat in a sensual way. We love that this feels like a modern take on a vintage menswear cabana shirt reminding us that travel is just around the corner. Summer is a very aspirational season that we dream about all year long and we really tried to capture that with the print and concept.
How do you get creative and inspired when looking for a print?
A: Inspiration can be found everywhere if you are looking for it. Actually the quest for inspiration helps shape a mindset of excitement and interest in the world that I am really grateful for. Sometimes it's art, sometimes it's nature… and sometimes it's travel. As a Southern California company, palms are a part of our everyday existence but as the skies clear and the sun shines in the Summer it lights up the palms that line Ocean Avenue in a new way… in a way the invites the promise of sandy beaches, cocktails and restful afternoons on a lounge chair. We wanted to invite people to join us on that sandy beach, without even needing to leave their home.
Any notable fabric details we should know about in this collection?
A: This collection was designed to transport you mentally and physically to a tropical point of view. We of course wanted to evoke that with print but also with an easy and effortless styling story… this whole collection was designed to mix and match back to itself and your existing Otium Tan pieces.
Favorite palm print piece to lounge around in?
A: Probably the Washable High Rise Pant Set because it is so versatile… Head to toe print is always so bold but I also love wearing the pieces separately as well.
Do you see this collection working beyond the bedroom? How would you style it?
A: Embracing rest is of course key in the bedroom, but we see the practice of living a restful life as one that has ease and comfort as you shuffle from bed to the pool to the lounge. When you make clothes that are centered around comfort and effortless style there are no boundaries on where it can live.
We understand you are a bit of a plant lady yourself. For the amateur grower (us), what’s a good first plant to start your garden with?
A: I have a house with a garden in the back and I had this vision that I would get out there and plant and harvest it myself. Turns out it was harder to fit that between zoom meetings than I thought so I must confess that my gardener keeps my veggies alive! Someday!
If you were a plant, you’d probably be a _____?
A: Aloe. It's useful in that you can eat it and use it for sunburns. It's clean, hard to kill but still interestingly architectural.
